Tencent Cloud CEO Dowson Tong has proposed a strategic shift in the company's AI development, moving away from competing for the largest foundational model toward enterprise-focused solutions. Tong emphasizes a multi-model approach for Tencent Cloud, allowing customers to select from various options rather than being restricted to a single proprietary model.

Internal data highlights the effectiveness of this strategy, with the company's CodeBuddy assistant now utilized by over 12,000 engineers. The tool reportedly generates more than 50% of new code and has reduced development time by over 40%. Tencent continues to invest in its own technology, having released more than 30 versions of its Hunyuan model over the past year.

The company's R&D spending reached record levels in 2025 to support both model development and necessary computing resources. This shift follows a broader organizational restructuring initiated in December 2025, which included the appointment of Shunyu Yao as Chief AI Scientist and the merger of the AI Lab with the Hunyuan team.

Tong is steering the company's focus toward tangible business value and return on investment. By prioritizing scenario-driven applications and engineering execution, Tencent aims to justify its capital expenditure and expand its addressable market in the enterprise AI sector through a model-agnostic cloud strategy.
