GitHub introduced Copilot Fusion and multi-agent Copilot Projects at the Universe 2026 event in San Francisco. The new tools aim to shift the platform from a simple autocomplete engine to a system that manages complex development tasks through delegated AI agents.
Copilot Fusion serves as a unified agent service designed for model selection and orchestration. Instead of relying on a single model, the system determines which models are best suited for specific parts of a task and coordinates their collaborative work.
The new functionality builds upon Project HydraFusion, a research preview released in September 2026 that demonstrated the ability to run multiple models simultaneously. GitHub claims this approach offers improved performance and lower costs compared to single-model tools like Claude Code.
To support these agentic development capabilities, GitHub implemented infrastructure upgrades centered around Microsoft Foundry. The platform continues to see significant activity, recording 7,4 billion commits during September 2026.
