Toyota has been testing a mid-engined GR Yaris prototype for over 18 months, utilizing it in Japanese Super Taikyu racing events. The latest iteration features a design that diverges from the standard hatchback, adopting a shape reminiscent of a traditional mid-engined sports car.

The vehicle is powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. This unit is expected to produce approximately 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque in road-legal configurations, with high-performance variants potentially reaching over 400 hp and 550 Nm.

The prototype incorporates a larger radiator and fan in the front, along with expanded air intakes in the rear quarter panels. The drivetrain includes an all-wheel-drive system paired with Torsen limited-slip differentials on both axles, with options for either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.
