Solstar Space successfully tested its Wi-Fi technology during a NASA proximity operations demonstration. The company's Deke Space Communicator connected a NASA R5-S10 cubesat with the Momentus Vigoride-7 orbital service vehicle. The system relayed data to the NASA Johnson Space Center using an experimental link provided by Iridium Communications.
During the 30-minute operation, the Deke communicator transmitted over 2,300 files, including optical, infrared, and lidar data. Prior to the mission, ground tests confirmed that the communication link between the cubesat and the Deke device could reach distances exceeding 200 meters. This mission marks the commercial debut of the technology after a decade of development.
The data collected during the mission will be used to train artificial intelligence models for future autonomous space operations. Solstar CEO Brian Barnett noted that the technology enables constant contact with payloads, which is essential for satellite servicing, manufacturing, and lunar operations. The company aims to provide 24/7 connectivity for space equipment.
In June, Encore Technologies Corp. invested $1 million in Solstar to support the company's growth. The mission involved a strategic partnership between Solstar, NASA, Momentus, and Iridium. This collaboration aims to establish a more connected space environment by validating interoperable technologies for close-proximity spacecraft maneuvers.
