A Reddit user successfully obtained a replacement for a damaged GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card from Nvidia. The user purchased the hardware second-hand and lacked an original receipt, yet the manufacturer approved the warranty claim.
The issue occurred while the user was running a local large-scale data processing model. The computer shut down unexpectedly, and the user reported a burning smell. Upon inspection, the 12VHPWR power cable was found melted and fused to the card's connector.
Before contacting Nvidia, the owner attempted to find repair services, but encountered difficulties due to the reference card's unique side-mounted power connector. The user eventually submitted a claim to Nvidia, providing the serial number and photos of the damage.
The entire replacement process took approximately one week from the moment the faulty device was shipped to the manufacturer. While the exact cause of the overheating remains unconfirmed, one theory suggests that frequent cable handling may have compromised the contact points.
