Epic Games is expanding its use of generative AI across its product ecosystem, including Fortnite and the upcoming Unreal Engine 6. Executive Vice President Marcus Wassmer confirmed that the company is utilizing AI tools to assist in writing code and developing engine features.
Engineers at Epic now employ ambient programming, where they guide AI tools to build software architecture rather than writing code manually. This collaborative approach aims to optimize memory usage, performance, and scalability while accelerating update cycles and reducing software bugs.
The company recently applied these methods to develop the new Epic Games launcher, aiming for faster startup speeds compared to Steam. Epic maintains that integrating AI is essential to avoid the risks of falling behind in development, prioritizing the use of advanced tools despite public concerns.
Epic Games intends to remain transparent about its AI integration strategies and share experiences with the broader developer community. The company emphasizes that a middle-ground approach to AI adoption is ineffective, opting instead to leverage the best available technology to refine Unreal Engine 6.
