Valve representatives Tom Giardino and Marc Wilkinson addressed concerns regarding the rise of AI-generated game clones on the Steam platform during the Steam Indie Connect conference in South Korea. The company stated it will not implement restrictions on the use of AI tools by developers.
The issue gained prominence during the October Steam Next Fest, where over 7,200 demos were featured. Statistics indicate that 36 percent of these submissions were created using generative AI. Valve noted that the platform's recommendation algorithm inadvertently highlighted low-quality content during the event's initial days.
Valve maintains that developers themselves are primarily responsible for protecting their intellectual property. The company suggests that creators should focus on integrating unique features, character, and original ideas into their projects to make them harder to replicate, rather than relying on easily copied mechanics.
Regarding the visibility of low-quality AI-generated titles, Marc Wilkinson confirmed that the company is actively exploring solutions to refine the platform's recommendation systems. Valve aims to make Steam more dynamic and intelligent to better manage the influx of content.
