Vessev has developed the VS-9, an electric hydrofoil ferry measuring approximately 30 feet in length. The vessel utilizes two wing-like structures beneath the hull to lift the boat above the water surface, with computer-controlled flaps ensuring stability. The front foil provides the majority of the lift, while the rear foil supports the company's proprietary electric motor.
The hydrofoil design allows the vessel to operate efficiently by reducing drag. The VS-9 is capable of clearing waves up to 0.75 meters, or two and a half feet. According to CEO Eric Laakmann, the company manufactures its own motors to control production costs, while sourcing batteries from external suppliers.
In August, Vessev secured $19 million in a Series A funding round. The startup is currently targeting urban transit operators, hotels, and tour companies as potential customers. The company aims to integrate its technology into mass transit systems in locations like New York City to facilitate water-based transportation.
While the current VS-9 model is a unique prototype, Vessev plans to increase production. Long-term business strategy includes the potential development of electric hydrofoil kits, which would allow other boat manufacturers to incorporate Vessev's propulsion and foil technology into their own vessel designs.
