The US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has released a high-resolution image of China's experimental spaceplane, Shenlong. The photograph was captured by a commercial Maxar Technologies satellite in 2024.
The Shenlong features a delta-wing design, a cargo bay, and a service module with solar arrays. Its configuration resembles the American X-37B spaceplane. The craft launches vertically and performs horizontal landings.
China has conducted four missions since September 2020, with the latest beginning on February 6, 2026. Previous flights lasted 276 and 266 days. The craft operates at altitudes up to 600 km.
Astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell reported that during the 2026 mission, the spaceplane deployed and subsequently captured small satellites in June, August, and September, demonstrating proximity maneuvering.
