Tesla has developed a high-voltage battery pack for the Roadster, leveraging over 20 years of electric vehicle manufacturing experience. Unlike mass-market models like the Model 3 or Model Y, which prioritize cycle life and reliability, the Roadster battery focuses on power density to support high-performance output.
The vehicle utilizes specially tuned 4680 cylindrical nickel-based lithium-ion cells. The powertrain features dual rear motors, delivering a peak power of 1,341 horsepower and 1,399 Nm of torque. The official range for the vehicle is stated to exceed 483 kilometers.
To manage heat during high-intensity discharge, Tesla implemented a new thermal management system. Each cell includes dedicated cooling lines, and the steel cell casings have been replaced with aluminum to improve heat conductivity and reduce weight. The battery pack cover is made of titanium, while the bottom retains an aluminum shield.
The Roadster demonstrates significant fast-charging capabilities, reaching a 70 percent charge in 10 minutes, specifically increasing battery levels from 15 percent to 85 percent. This performance places the vehicle among the top tier of high-end electric sports cars, which typically require 16 to 20 minutes for similar charging cycles.
