Tesla's vice president of engineering, Lars Moravy, confirmed that the upcoming Roadster features the company's most advanced high-voltage battery pack to date. The design prioritizes power density and performance over the longevity focus seen in mass-market models like the Model 3 and Model Y.
The vehicle utilizes proprietary 4680 cylindrical cells with a nickel-based lithium-ion chemistry specifically formulated for high power output. To manage thermal demands, Tesla integrated cooling lines on both sides of each cell. The battery casing incorporates aluminum for improved heat dissipation and weight reduction, while the top cover uses titanium for enhanced thermal insulation.
Performance specifications for the top-tier Roadster include a peak power of 1341 horsepower and 1399 Nm of torque. The battery architecture operates between 800V and 1000V, supporting a peak charging power estimated between 500kW and 1MW. Tesla claims the battery can charge from 15% to 85% in approximately 10 minutes.
The new Roadster is expected to deliver a range exceeding 483 kilometers. While Tesla has not disclosed the exact battery capacity, the engineering team emphasizes that the design is the culmination of over two decades of electric vehicle manufacturing experience.
