Tesla has provided technical details on the next-generation Roadster, which was first announced in 2017. The vehicle features a multi-mode suction system that uses fans and underbody skirts to create a low-pressure zone, generating up to 4,700 kg of downforce to improve traction.
The car is planned in three trim levels: Performance, Thrust, and Rocket. The Rocket trim is the only version equipped for flight, featuring cold gas thrusters and a single-seat configuration to accommodate the necessary air tanks. These thrusters are designed to provide short-distance flight capabilities.
During demonstrations, the Roadster utilized rear-mounted cold gas thrusters to achieve a 0-60 mph time of 0.81 seconds. Tesla claims that the top-spec version will be capable of reaching 60 mph in under 0.59 seconds. The system generates 80 kilo-Newtons of force.
The vehicle incorporates steer-by-wire technology and an adjustable rear wing to manage aerodynamic efficiency. The active wing system is designed to balance the need for downforce during cornering with the goal of reducing drag at high speeds.
