Sunlight AI has secured $17.4 million in seed funding to assist independent medical practices in reducing administrative expenses. The startup, based in New York and Miami, aims to automate billing, paperwork, and financial operations using artificial intelligence to help doctors maintain their independence from large hospital systems.
The investment round was led by Lan Xuexhao of Basis Set Ventures. Additional participants included Sofeon Ventures, Social Leverage, Actions Capital, Overlook Ventures, Early Light Ventures, and various individual investors such as Evolent Health founder Frank Williams.
Alongside the funding announcement, the company completed the acquisition of Bradford Medical Associates. This move marks the startup's strategy to integrate existing service providers into its technology platform rather than operating solely as a software provider.
Data from the Physicians Advocacy Institute and Avalere Health indicates that hospitals and corporate groups acquired over 85,000 medical practices between 2018 and 2026, reducing the share of independent physicians to 18%. Research from Yale and the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that prices for physician services rose by 15.1% within two years following hospital acquisitions.
Founded by Sina Chehrazi, who previously established Nayya Health, the company seeks to combine AI software, practice-management infrastructure, and human expertise. The platform aims to improve payment collections and reduce overhead costs, allowing physicians to focus on patient care.
