OpenAI has established an independent advisory group based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Advisory Group aims to integrate mathematicians into the company's research processes and provide a formal channel for feedback from the academic community.
This initiative follows a controversy involving the publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. OpenAI claims that a previously unreleased AI model has successfully solved over 100 open problems across various mathematical fields, sparking criticism from the scientific community regarding the pace of these developments.
More than 25 Fields Medalists signed an open letter expressing concerns that AI laboratories are prioritizing competitive speed over rigorous intellectual work. Tensions previously escalated when OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship of a mathematical event at the California Institute of Technology.
The new advisory group will evaluate the significance of research results and coordinate their publication. While participation is unpaid, members maintain independence from OpenAI. However, the group holds no decision-making authority over the company's research direction or the speed of its AI development.
