Researchers from ITMO University and the Institute of Automation and Control Processes of the FEB RAS have developed a compact microlaser based on perovskite. This device enables the control of vortex light, which is radiation that rotates around its own axis.
The team manufactured microdisks with a diameter of several microns. They created a series of nano-holes along the edges of these disks, resembling gear teeth. This structure allows for the manipulation of the emitted light's characteristics, including its rotation and direction.
To process the perovskite material, the scientists utilized a method involving ultra-short, high-power laser pulses. This technique allows for the creation of arbitrary patterns of nano-holes on the surface of the material.
The development enables the extraction of vortex light from a photonic chip, allowing it to be directed through free space to other components or detectors. The project was supported by the Russian Science Foundation.
