NASA has released a new sonification project featuring the Eagle Nebula, also known as M16. The project converts visual data from the Hubble and Chandra space telescopes into audio, allowing listeners to experience the nebula through sound.

The Eagle Nebula is located approximately 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Serpens. It is characterized by towering columns of cold gas and dust where young stars are actively forming.

The sonification process maps the vertical position of elements within the image to pitch. As the scan line moves from left to right, the audio output reflects the distribution of stars and cosmic dust.

The pillars are currently being sculpted and eroded by ultraviolet light and stellar winds from massive stars within the cluster. Scientists note that the environment in M16 is likely similar to the conditions that formed our Sun.
