Elon Musk is developing the Terafab project, a joint semiconductor manufacturing initiative between Tesla and SpaceX. The project aims to establish a vertically integrated production campus in Texas to reduce reliance on external foundries like Samsung and TSMC.
The primary objective of Terafab is the high-volume production of AI5 chips, which are specialized for AI inference tasks. The facility targets an annual production capacity of 1 terawatt of total compute power.
Musk claims that the AI5 chips will offer 2-3 times better performance-per-watt than Nvidia products at approximately 10% of the cost. These figures represent internal projections rather than verified benchmarks.
The project is being rolled out in phases, with a pilot facility currently under construction near the Tesla Gigafactory in Texas and larger operations planned for Grimes County. Intel is providing technology support for the project, specifically focusing on the 14A process node.
