Mars caves are being considered as potential sites for future expedition bases. According to Vladimir Surdin, a senior researcher at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University, these underground locations could provide essential protection from radiation for astronauts.
Data indicates that radiation levels on Mars are approximately 1.5 times higher than those on low Earth orbit. Given that the transit to the planet takes over six months, crews will require a safe environment to rest and recover before attempting the return journey.
Caves offer a natural shield against hazardous radiation, allowing teams to wait out unfavorable conditions. While researchers suggest that long-term stays beneath the surface are a possibility, the suitability of specific Martian caves for base construction remains to be evaluated.
