Google has updated its software engineering hiring process to incorporate artificial intelligence tools. Candidates for specific roles are now permitted to use Gemini during technical interviews to solve problems, with interviewers evaluating how effectively applicants interact with the model.

A new interview format, code comprehension, tests a candidate's ability to analyze and evaluate code, including code generated by AI. Applicants must demonstrate prompt engineering skills and overall AI fluency. This proficiency is now a mandatory requirement for most engineering roles, excluding entry-level positions.

The company reports that 75% of its new code is currently generated by AI, which is then reviewed by human engineers. Google is also testing Gemini to transcribe interviews and generate draft feedback for candidates during video calls in Google Meet to streamline the hiring process.

Despite these changes, Google has prohibited employees from using generative AI to create automated hiring agents or to independently generate final interview decisions. The company emphasizes that the new focus remains on assessing a candidate's ability to verify AI output and integrate it into real-world tasks.
