A recent PYMNTS Intelligence report highlights that 21% of U.S. consumers abandoned online shopping carts in the 30 days prior to the survey due to the lack of preferred payment options. This trend affected nearly 56 million shoppers, with digital wallets identified as the primary missing feature for 47% of those who left their carts, totaling 26.3 million individuals.
Data indicates that 87 million U.S. consumers, representing one-third of the shopping population, utilized digital wallets online during the same period. Usage rates are highest among younger demographics, with 47% of Gen Z and 44% of millennials opting for these payment methods. These figures suggest a significant opportunity for merchants to capture lost revenue by expanding their payment acceptance.
The study also explores the intersection of digital wallets and artificial intelligence. Approximately 52% of current digital wallet users expressed interest in linking their accounts to AI agents within the next two years, compared to 39% of non-users. Consumers prioritize features such as purchase approval, spending limits, and control over payment sources when interacting with AI-driven shopping tools.
