BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu announced that the company now employs over 1.02 million people. This figure exceeds the combined workforce of Toyota, GM, Ford, and Tesla, which totals approximately 851,000 employees.
The company's headcount has fluctuated significantly, growing from 703,500 at the end of 2023 to 968,900 by the end of 2024, followed by a reduction to 869,600 by the end of 2025. In the last four months, the workforce increased by over 100,000 people.
Of the total staff, 960,000 are based in China, while 60,000 work abroad. The workforce includes 120,000 research and development engineers focused on batteries, motors, semiconductors, and electronic controls.
BYD's business model relies on vertical integration, encompassing battery production, chip manufacturing, and contract electronics assembly. The BYD Electronic division alone accounted for 165,000 employees at the end of 2025.
Despite the large workforce, BYD's vehicle output per employee remains lower than that of competitors. In 2025, the company produced 5.3 vehicles per worker, compared to 12 for Tesla and 29 for Toyota.
