The nonprofit Biohub, supported by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, is leading a $1,8 billion initiative aimed at developing AI models capable of predicting cell behavior. This project intends to accelerate the drug development process by integrating data, specialized laboratory equipment, and significant computing power.

The funding structure includes a $500 million commitment from Biohub for its five-year Virtual Biology Initiative. Additionally, Meta, Google DeepMind, and Isomorphic Labs have collectively contributed $300 million. The US Department of Energy is providing over $500 million for lab measurements and compute resources over the next five years.

The National Institutes of Health are coordinating datasets supported by more than $500 million in previous federal funding, which Biohub will standardize for AI training. Commercial partners will receive one year of exclusive access to the data they funded before it becomes publicly available, while government-funded results will be open access.

The first dataset is expected to be ready in approximately one year. Other industry players are also active in this space: Anthropic has established its own biology laboratory for AI-driven drug discovery, and the OpenAI Foundation has allocated over $125 million toward biological and medical datasets.
