Ron Johnson, who led the creation of Apple's retail network starting in 2000, argues that AI agents will not replace physical shopping for personal electronics. He believes consumers will continue to visit stores to experience products firsthand before making significant purchases, such as laptops.
Major tech firms are currently investing in agentic commerce to automate the shopping process. Google is developing the Universal Commerce Protocol to assist AI in product discovery and checkout, while OpenAI is integrating shopping features directly into ChatGPT.
Johnson notes that Apple's retail success was built on human interaction rather than just store design. He highlights that Apple Store employees are not paid on commission, which allows them to focus on customer needs instead of sales pressure.
Reflecting on his career, Johnson discussed his tenure at J.C. Penney, where he was ousted in 2013 after a failed transformation attempt. He later founded Enjoy Technology, which filed for bankruptcy in 2022 and sold its assets to Asurion.
Despite his skepticism regarding AI-driven shopping, Johnson identifies as an AI optimist. He suggests that while AI will improve the information available to shoppers, it cannot replicate human intuition or the physical experience of testing a product.
