Amazon is betting on ambient computing, a concept where intelligent devices proactively understand user needs rather than relying on traditional applications. Panos Panay, Senior Vice President of Devices, Alexa, and Leo, outlined this vision at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference on October 15.

Panay, who previously spent 19 years at Microsoft leading the Surface division, argues that current smartphone interactions require too much manual input. He envisions a future where ambient devices operate in the background, utilizing sensors and AI to anticipate user requirements without constant user commands.

Privacy remains a core design pillar for these new systems. According to Panay, users must retain full control over their data. Amazon integrated these privacy safeguards into its newly released AI wearable device, Bee, which was launched on the same day as his presentation.

Despite the shift toward ambient intelligence, Panay does not expect smartphones to disappear. Instead, he predicts the emergence of a new 'intelligence layer' that will connect various hardware forms, making the surrounding environment more responsive and useful for the user.
