Apple is preparing to release its first smart home display, internally codenamed J490, as early as October. The device will run on the homeOS operating system, with references to both the hardware and software already appearing in recent firmware updates.
The product will launch in two versions: a desktop model with a base and a wall-mountable version codenamed J491. Both devices feature a small, square-shaped screen, a built-in camera for FaceTime and facial recognition, and integrated speakers for media playback and intercom functionality.
The display will serve as a central hub for controlling HomeKit and Matter-compatible devices. It integrates an AI-powered version of Siri, allowing users to manage smart home accessories, access personal data, search photos, and execute complex cross-app commands via voice or touch.
The project development faced delays due to the timeline of the new Siri technology. With the AI integration now ready, the device is expected to become a key component of Apple's hardware ecosystem, joining the iPhone, Apple TV, and HomePod under the leadership of John Ternus.
