Apple has reportedly shifted its development focus away from the M6 chip series. According to Mark Gurman, the company has largely halted work on M6, with the standard version expected to power the Mac mini, iMac, and entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro models.
The company will not release Pro, Max, or Ultra variants for the M6 generation. Instead, upcoming OLED MacBook Pro devices are slated to feature the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Resources are now being redirected toward the development of the M7 platform.
The M7 series will prioritize optimization for artificial intelligence workloads. The standard M7 chip is expected to launch in 2027, followed by the M7 Pro and M7 Max for high-end touchscreen MacBook Pro models by the end of that year.
The M7 Ultra, designed for peak performance, is currently scheduled for release in the first half of 2028. Due to this delay in the Ultra chip roadmap, the launch of a new Mac Studio in 2027 remains unlikely.
