Anthropic has acquired Mithril Medicine, a biotech startup founded by Cody Tranbarger. The company operated with only one full-time employee, leveraging the Claude AI model to coordinate research, logistics, and contracts across 11 external laboratories. The acquisition was finalized in July 2026 and publicly announced on October 27, 2026.
Mithril Medicine focused on developing antibody-based treatments for two rare genetic disorders: LAMA2-related congenital muscular dystrophy and alpha-dystroglycanopathy. In mouse studies, the experimental treatment demonstrated improved muscle strength and survival rates. The research results are preliminary, and the therapy has not yet been tested in humans.
The acquisition marks a strategic shift for Anthropic, moving from providing AI tools to pharmaceutical partners toward direct involvement in drug development. Anthropic plans to select formal drug candidates in 2027, with potential human trials for muscular dystrophy treatments targeted for late 2028 and 2029.
The startup model, dubbed Pipeline-in-a-Person, allowed Tranbarger to reduce the time required for research strategy development from months to days. Anthropic currently maintains pharmaceutical collaborations with companies including Bristol Myers Squibb, BigHat Biosciences, Generate Biomedicines, Divergence Labs, Enveda, and The Column Group.
