Amazon announced a $1.9 billion investment aimed at improving delivery safety and increasing compensation for delivery associates. The funding will help delivery service partners raise the average pay for associates to nearly $24 per hour. Additionally, the company is allocating $70 million over the next five years to support community impact initiatives managed by delivery service partners.

The company is deploying AI-powered tools, including smart delivery glasses, to streamline operations. These wearable devices allow associates to scan packages, view navigation, and receive alerts hands-free. Use of this technology is voluntary. Furthermore, Amazon is installing new surround-view cameras in 50% of its Rivian electric fleet by the end of the year to detect pedestrians and cyclists.

The Amazon Delivery App is receiving updates with dynamic hazard alerts that provide real-time notifications about road closures and accidents. The system will automatically adjust navigation routes during bad weather. These safety measures are part of a broader strategy to compete with Walmart by expanding the logistics network, including the Project Mercury plan to reach over 1,000 same-day delivery hubs by 2031.
