An Xpeng X9 owner reported that the airbags of his seven-seat electric MPV failed to deploy during a collision on October 15. The vehicle hit a curb, a tree, and a utility pole before rolling over, resulting in the car being declared a total loss by the insurer. The owner purchased the vehicle for approximately ¥500 000.

Xpeng stated that backend data and driving footage confirm the vehicle was in manual mode. The company explained that the impact did not reach the sensor trigger threshold, noting that the driver was accelerating and steering sharply before the crash. Xpeng has agreed to cooperate with a third-party appraisal requested by the owner.

The Xpeng X9, launched on January 1, 2024, is the company's first MPV. Pure-electric versions are priced between ¥359 800 and ¥419 800, while the extended-range models introduced in November last year start at ¥309 800. From January to September, 15 805 units were sold in China.

The model has previously faced quality concerns regarding its air suspension. In July, Xpeng issued a recall for 33 473 vehicles manufactured between August 8, 2023, and August 11, 2025, due to potential air spring leaks in high heat. The company also extended the warranty for the front air spring system to 8 years or 160 000 km.
