Western Digital CEO stated that the company's top seven core clients have placed orders extending through 2030 and 2031. This surge in demand is driven by the role of HDD storage in managing massive datasets generated by AI workloads, which the company views as a long-term market opportunity.
The company's production capacity for HDDs is fully booked for 2026, with long-term supply agreements already secured through 2028. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, Western Digital reported a 55 percent year-over-year revenue increase. Management noted that revenue and shipment volumes are currently constrained by supply limits rather than demand.
AI infrastructure requirements are shifting storage needs, as AI servers now feature 1.7TB of storage compared to 0.5TB in traditional servers. As AI transitions from training to inference, tasks such as KV cache management are increasingly offloaded from GPU memory to high-performance storage systems, further driving capacity demand.
Western Digital emphasizes that while GPUs determine processing speed, storage capacity is essential for the long-term viability of AI clusters. The company continues to see significant demand for HDD storage to handle training datasets, logs, and long-term data archiving for cloud providers and hyperscale enterprises.
