Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency experimental electric vehicle, built on the MEB+ platform. The car features a 135 hp APP290 electric motor and a 54.9 kWh battery. Engineers focused on aerodynamics, weight reduction, and energy loss minimization to achieve high efficiency.
The vehicle achieved a drag coefficient of 0.158, which the company claims is a record for road-legal cars. During a test drive from Wolfsburg to Vienna, the car covered 1,278 km with a single intermediate charge. The energy consumption was 6.89 kWh per 100 km, excluding charging losses.
The car measures 4,775 by 1,744 by 1,392 mm with a 2,700 mm wheelbase. It features active air intakes, covered rear wheels, and specialized Continental EcoContact 7 tires. Solar panels integrated into the roof and rear door provide 370 W of power for low-voltage systems.
To reduce weight, the interior lacks a traditional infotainment system, relying instead on user-provided mobile devices and portable Bluetooth speakers. The cabin is a 2+2 coupe layout with 481 liters of cargo space. The project draws inspiration from the 2013 Volkswagen XL1.
