Volkswagen has initiated a recall of over 22,500 ID.4 electric crossovers in the United States, covering model years 2023 through 2026. The action follows reports of a potential high-voltage battery defect that could lead to vehicle fires. Documents regarding this safety concern were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on September 30, 2026.
The manufacturer identified that the risk occurs under specific charging conditions when the battery level exceeds 80%. As the company has not yet determined the exact cause or finalized a repair solution, owners are advised to limit charging to 80% until further notice. Volkswagen estimates that the defect may affect approximately 0.1% of the recalled vehicles.
This recall follows previous battery-related issues for the automaker in 2026. In January, Volkswagen recalled over 44,000 ID.4 units in the US due to overheating and discharge risks, while a European campaign in March involved approximately 94,000 vehicles across the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz, and Cupra Born lines. It remains unclear if these incidents are linked.
Concurrently, the company has officially unveiled the ID. Tiguan, which is positioned as the successor to the ID.4 model.
