In September 2026, European EV sales reached nearly 600,000 units, marking a 39% year-over-year increase. BEV sales grew by 50%, while PHEV sales rose by 16%. France and Germany saw significant growth, with sales reaching 80,000 and 117,000 units, respectively.

North American EV sales dropped 44% year-over-year in September to approximately 130,000 units. This decline is largely attributed to a high baseline from September 2025, when buyers rushed to purchase vehicles before the expiration of the US federal $7,500 tax credit.

China remains the largest EV market, with 1.11 million units sold in September, despite an 18% year-over-year decline. Chinese manufacturers set a record for monthly exports of new energy vehicles, reaching 558,000 units.

Future export strategies for Chinese automakers face potential hurdles. A proposed EU agreement may cap imports of Chinese-made EVs at 350,000 units in 2027. Additionally, China plans to reduce its export VAT rebate for new energy vehicles from 13% to 9% starting April 1, 2027.
