Instagram head Adam Mosseri stated that public frustration and anxiety regarding artificial intelligence are likely to increase over the next few years. He noted that these concerns are prevalent among creators, engineers, and mathematicians, who fear job displacement and the unauthorized use of their content for model training.
Regarding platform moderation, Mosseri admitted that Instagram currently struggles to rank AI-generated content as effectively as human-made material. He acknowledged the prevalence of low-quality AI content, which he previously referred to as AI slop, though he suggested the term is currently overused.
The platform has implemented specific measures to address AI-related issues. In August, Instagram began restricting AI-generated profiles, and earlier this year, it introduced mandatory labeling for AI-operated accounts. Despite these efforts, the company continues to face challenges with misleading content, such as deepfakes of celebrities.
Mosseri emphasized that a total ban on AI content is not a practical solution for the platform. Instead, the company is focusing on transparency requirements to ensure users can distinguish between real and AI-generated media while continuing to evaluate how to handle deceptive AI materials.
