The 2026 HERE-SBD EV Index reports that the US electric vehicle market share stands at 5.37% year-to-date, reflecting a decline of nearly 3% compared to the full year of 2025. Despite this, consumer sentiment is shifting, with 12% of non-EV drivers now seeing no barriers to adoption, up from 6% last year.

Drivers cite improved range, charging speed, and infrastructure as key factors for considering EVs. The report notes that 31 600 public charging facilities were added in the US since the 2025 index, while charge power capacity increased by 47%. Positive perception of public charging availability rose to 47%, compared to 28% in the previous year.

Practicality is becoming a primary driver for adoption, with 31% of respondents identifying better value as a key motivator. Performance and lower costs were cited by 29% of those surveyed. Data shows that 77% of current EV owners are likely to replace their existing vehicle with another electric model, as the experience often exceeds expectations.

The industry is seeing a shift in charging locations, with convenience stores and quick-serve restaurants increasingly installing chargers. This trend is supported by platforms like the IONNA consortium, which focuses on lounge-style charging facilities. These developments aim to address the needs of potential buyers who lack access to home charging.
