The newly formed United Microelectronics Company (UMK) aims to acquire stakes in several Chinese semiconductor factories. This initiative is designed to secure production capacity for Russian companies, as domestic facilities currently rely on 90 nm technology, which dates back to 2003.
UMK is expected to include major Russian players such as Mikron, Angstrem, and NM-Tech. The project has a budget of 1 ₽ trillion to be invested by 2030, with 750 ₽ billion provided by the Russian government and 250 ₽ billion by Sberbank.
The strategy focuses on purchasing stakes in smaller, non-major Chinese factories rather than large manufacturers. The goal is to secure dedicated production lines for Russian needs, ensuring priority access to manufacturing quotas and predictable pricing for domestic chip designers.
Legal and industry experts note that acquiring equity does not automatically grant access to patents or proprietary technology. Additional agreements would be required to obtain such documentation. Currently, the investment strategy for these deals remains under development.
