Toyota has confirmed plans to launch a hydrogen fuel cell version of the Hilux pickup in 2028. The vehicle is designed for European professional customers and will be built on the ninth-generation Hilux platform. The powertrain utilizes technology derived from the Mirai sedan model.
The hydrogen Hilux targets a WLTP driving range of 248 miles and a towing capacity of 5,512 pounds. In comparison, the electric Hilux variant offers a range of approximately 149 to 152 miles and a towing capacity of up to 4,410 pounds. Refueling the hydrogen model takes about five minutes.
The company is positioning the truck for corporate fleets and leasing companies rather than private buyers. Toyota has not yet disclosed pricing or plans for a potential launch in the United States market.
The adoption of the hydrogen Hilux depends on the expansion of refueling infrastructure. Currently, there are nearly 200 public hydrogen stations in Europe, compared to over 1.3 million public electric vehicle charging points across the European Union.
