Enterprise AI companies are increasingly raising nine-figure funding rounds to support teams of forward-deployed engineers. These specialists work directly within customer offices to ensure that software products function as intended, effectively acting as a human-powered service layer rather than purely autonomous systems.

Data indicates a surge in demand for these roles. Indeed reports that job postings for forward-deployed engineers rose from 643 in April 2025 to 5,330 in April 2026. Industry-wide, listings for such positions have increased by over 800% to 1,000% year-over-year according to various market reports.

Compensation packages for these engineers are significant. Total compensation in the U.S. often exceeds $300 000. Anthropic lists base pay between $280 000 and $320 000, while OpenAI offers base salaries ranging from $185 000 to $300 000, plus equity. Some roles at Anthropic reach $400 000 in total compensation.

OpenAI has established a deployment joint venture named DeployCo, which has secured over $4 billion in investment. The venture received $1.5 billion from OpenAI and $4 billion from a group of backers including TPG, Bain Capital, Advent, Brookfield, and Goanna. The vehicle guarantees investors an annual 17.5% return over five years.
