Anthropic is preparing for an initial public offering and has announced plans to allocate 5% of its equity to a new entity, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The move is subject to shareholder approval and aims to address the economic impact of artificial intelligence.
The fund's stake is designed to grow as the company's valuation increases. The board may allocate an additional 2% of shares for every 50% rise in the company's value above a set baseline. Based on a May valuation of $965 billion, the initial 5% stake is estimated at $48.25 billion.
The entity will be structured as a wholly owned limited liability company. It intends to support charitable organizations, finance programs related to AI economic consequences, and potentially provide direct financial distributions to affected populations.
The company stated that no equity from the fund will be used for political lobbying or donations. Anthropic currently estimates that roughly 20% of its total shares are designated for public purposes, including previous commitments from co-founders.
Elon Musk responded to the announcement by proposing a direct distribution of shares to the public. He pledged to give one SpaceX share to every child in America next year, though specific distribution details remain undisclosed.
