Tesla has unveiled the updated second-generation Roadster, which features a design inspired by the Cybertruck and utilizes reactive thrusters for acceleration and stunts. The company plans to begin production in 2028, with pre-orders currently open for a deposit of $50,000.
The vehicle is available in three configurations. The base Performance model seats two and accelerates to 97 km/h in under 1.6 seconds. The Thrust version, intended for track use, features rear thrusters and reaches 97 km/h in under 0.9 seconds. The top-tier Rocket model is a single-seater with additional underbody thrusters, capable of 97 km/h in under 0.59 seconds.
The Rocket variant uses a compressed air system with 600 liters of storage, providing 80 kilonewtons of thrust. The vehicle also employs powerful fans and an active skirt to create downforce of up to 4,700 kg, allowing it to adhere to surfaces. Its control actuators are derived from the Optimus robot project.
The interior features a minimalist design with a butterfly-shaped steering wheel and manual seat adjustments to save weight. While the 2017 concept promised a 1,000 km range, the current target is over 480 km. Tesla estimates the top speed could reach approximately 612 km/h, though this remains subject to safety adjustments.
