Tesla is developing a feature for its Cybercab robotaxi that will allow passengers to view side and rear camera feeds at any time during a trip. The company's UI software engineer, Evan, confirmed the feature is currently in development following a suggestion from a user who tested the vehicle. This update aims to address the lack of traditional side and rearview mirrors in the autonomous car.
Currently, the Cybercab only displays camera feeds when the vehicle reaches its destination to assist passengers in exiting safely. The system uses 8 external cameras to monitor the surroundings, but these are not accessible to passengers while the car is in motion. The new functionality is expected to help users feel more secure in a vehicle that lacks a steering wheel, brake pedals, and mirrors.
The introduction of this feature may be part of the upgrades mentioned by lead engineer Eric Earley, which also include seat improvements. Tesla is actively gathering feedback from passengers in Austin, where more than 300 Cybercabs are currently deployed. The company plans to expand its autonomous taxi service to Dallas in the near future.
The design of the Cybercab has drawn attention from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency has issued 21 questions regarding the vehicle's compliance with federal standards, specifically concerning the absence of mirrors and the functionality of rear-facing cameras. Tesla has been granted a 30-day extension to respond to the inquiry.
