Tesla has officially rebranded its advanced driver assistance system in Europe, changing the name from Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to Tesla Assisted Driving. This decision follows direct pressure from the German transportation ministry, which previously characterized the original name as misleading regarding the system's actual capabilities.
The German transport minister, Steffen Bilger, confirmed that Tesla proposed the name change following discussions held last month. Bilger now intends to support the approval of Tesla Assisted Driving across the European market, ahead of a potential EU-wide vote scheduled for later this year.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has actively campaigned for the approval of the software in Europe for several years, citing potential safety benefits. Earlier this year, the Netherlands became the first European nation to grant approval for the system, though the company's regulatory efforts have faced recent scrutiny regarding the validity of its safety research.
The software has evolved from basic lane centering and adaptive cruise control to a more complex system capable of navigating highways and surface streets. Despite these updates, the technology remains the subject of various federal investigations and civil lawsuits related to vehicle crashes.
