Tesla has renamed its driver-assistance software on European websites to Tesla Assisted Driving. The change, which took effect on October 8, 2026, replaces the previous Full Self-Driving branding used by the company.
The rebranding is a strategic move to address concerns from European regulators, particularly in Germany and the Netherlands. Authorities previously criticized the Full Self-Driving name as misleading, noting that the system is classified as a Level 2 driver-assistance feature requiring constant human supervision.
As of early October 2026, eight EU countries have granted national approvals for the software based on a template provided by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW, which issued a provisional approval in April 2026. Tesla is currently seeking broader EU-wide recognition for its system.
The decision on EU-wide approval rests with the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV). The committee has delayed its vote on the matter until at least December 2026. While Germany previously objected to the branding, its Transport Ministry now supports accelerating the approval process for Tesla's systems.
Tesla has previously made similar naming adjustments in China and has gradually reduced its use of Autopilot terminology in the US. Despite these changes, the company continues to use the Full Self-Driving name on its American website.
