Tesla has launched Optimus Academy, an internal initiative designed to train humanoid robots by having them perform real-world tasks. The program utilizes a self-play method where robots log their actions to refine their AI models based on the results.
To support this training, Tesla intends to manufacture between 10,000 and 20,000 Optimus units. These robots are currently being produced on a dedicated line at the company's factory in Fremont, California, which previously handled Model S and X production.
The company is building a larger production facility in Austin, Texas, to increase manufacturing capacity. Additionally, Tesla plans to integrate its AI5 chip into the robots around April 2027, with external customer deliveries targeted for the end of 2027.
Tesla expects to release a video within the next two months demonstrating the robots performing AI-driven tasks. While the manufacturing process is validated for commercial use, the company noted that the production ramp remains in an early stage.
