Tesla is expanding the capabilities of its Grok AI assistant integrated into vehicle infotainment systems. According to the latest Model Y owner's manual, the company is preparing to launch a new feature that allows drivers to send and receive text messages using voice commands. Users will be able to dictate messages to contacts or specific phone numbers without taking their hands off the steering wheel.
Grok has been evolving since its introduction in the 2025.26 software update. Currently, the assistant can manage navigation, initiate phone calls, search vehicle settings, and control hardware features like climate control, seat heating, and ventilation. It also provides answers to vehicle-related questions by accessing the digital owner's manual.
The AI assistant is now available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and several Asian countries. Beyond basic tasks, Tesla has introduced location-based reminders and deep integration with vehicle systems. Elon Musk has previously confirmed that future updates will allow Grok to control Full Self-Driving (FSD) functions.
While the text messaging feature is currently listed in the manual, Tesla has not yet announced an official release date. Additionally, the company recently rolled out an FSD-based automatic collision avoidance system, which was discovered as a hidden feature in the documentation earlier this week.
