A pre-production Tesla Cybercab was spotted in Berkeley, California, revealing the steering mechanism used in test prototypes. The vehicle features a Cybertruck steering wheel mounted on an exposed steering column, attached via a fabricated adjustable rail.
Tesla originally unveiled the two-seat Cybercab in October 2024, marketing it as a robotaxi without a steering wheel, pedals, or mirrors. The company stated the vehicle would cost less than $30,000.
While Tesla began producing steering-wheel-less units at Giga Texas earlier this year, test mules on public roads require human intervention. Regulations for testing autonomous prototypes typically mandate that a human driver must be able to take control.
The observed test unit features Texas manufacturer plates and a gold-colored wrap. The Cybercab utilizes the next-generation vehicle platform that was previously associated with Tesla's planned $25,000 car project.
