Tesla has announced that unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) for customer-owned vehicles is now scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2027. This update follows a series of previous timeline projections from the company regarding autonomous driving capabilities.

The functionality will be limited to Tesla's managed Robotaxi fleet rather than allowing personal use anywhere. Owners will be able to add their vehicles to the existing network, which currently operates in six US metropolitan areas with restricted geofenced zones.

Operations within these zones are restricted to low-speed routes and generally avoid highways. In the Bay Area, the service continues to require a safety driver due to regulatory requirements, as Tesla has not provided the necessary data to the California DMV for higher levels of autonomy.

By the end of the third quarter of 2026, Tesla reported that its Robotaxi fleet had accumulated nearly 2 million miles of unsupervised driving. Third-party tracking indicates that the number of fully driverless Tesla vehicles currently in operation remains in the dozens.
