Stellantis has patented a new system designed to mitigate risks from overheating electric vehicle batteries. The technology, titled 'Vehicle High-Voltage Battery Quick Release System,' allows the entire battery pack to be physically and electrically disconnected from the vehicle in the event of thermal anomalies or damage.

The system can be activated by drivers, passengers, or emergency responders using various controls, including physical buttons, levers, touchscreens, or toggle switches. Stellantis suggests placing these release switches in multiple locations, such as inside the cabin or in the trunk, to ensure accessibility for people outside the vehicle.

The patent describes a mechanism that cuts high-voltage connections and mechanically detaches the battery pack, potentially utilizing a sliding frame structure. Once the battery is released, the vehicle can continue to operate using its 12V battery, allowing it to drive away from the hazardous pack under the control of the vehicle's motor controller.
