Valve has released a new update for the Steam client, currently available via the preview and beta channels. The primary focus of this release is a significant overhaul of the HDR streaming mechanism within the Remote Play feature, aiming to improve visual quality across various platforms.
The update introduces advanced HDR settings for the client, offering three distinct modes: automatic, which activates when HDR content is detected; always-on, which can increase brightness for SDR content; and off. These settings provide users with greater control over their streaming experience.
Compatibility has been expanded to include HDR capture for Linux desktops using PipeWire and for streaming from macOS. Furthermore, users with Android devices running version 15 or newer can now access HDR support through the beta version of the Steam Link application.
The update is currently restricted to users participating in the preview or beta testing programs. Valve expects to roll out these changes to the general public in the coming weeks, following the completion of the testing phase.
