Ukrainian officials report that Starlink has implemented new service restrictions in the region without prior notice. These changes have directly impacted military drone operations and defense missions, according to statements from defense tech advisor Serhii Beskrestnov.
The primary technical limitation involves a block on connections for devices traveling at speeds exceeding 100mph. Beskrestnov noted that this restriction has caused the failure of several missions and hindered the country's ability to counter Russian drone strikes.
The service disruption follows recent political commentary from Elon Musk regarding President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The timing of these changes has led Ukrainian officials to suggest that the service limitations are linked to the current political climate.
International reactions have emerged, with Poland's deputy prime minister, Radosław Sikorski, publicly questioning the move. Poland currently funds the Starlink subscription for Ukraine and has expressed concern over the potential politicization of the technology.
